Lichen Tree

Lichen Tree

Lightening split the lichen tree
Down the middle straight,
Steel bolt, banded and
Handed hope for redemption.

Splinters holding through winter
On into spring
Nigh to the killing blow
The thing was not want
To live
Like this.

Dying in turns
The lightening burns
Were never far from the surface.
The scaffold so boldly,
Beautifully placed with
Engineers precision.

No doubt in the outcome:
Fresh green summer glory and
Yet,
The story ends with
Brittle bends of limbs in
The woodstove fire,

The salvage of salvation denied.
